The original owner, or a legal heir if the owner has died. If the estate went through probate, the personal representative typically files for the estate.
What you will typically need
- A claim form, filed online or on paper. If you write to the Treasurer’s office, it sends a form with instructions for the documents you need
- A copy of the owner’s death certificate
- Photo identification for the person claiming
- If the estate was probated: typically certified Letters Testamentary or Letters of Administration, or the court’s final order of distribution
- If no court filing was needed: typically the Treasurer’s Table of Heirship, a form the office publishes on its website
Requirements can vary with the type and amount of property. Follow the instructions on the official site.
What it costs
Free. The Treasurer’s Office says it never charges to return unclaimed property, and claims processing is provided at no cost to the owner.
Good to know
- There is no time limit. The Treasurer holds cash property in trust forever, and if the property was reported as an interest-bearing account, the Treasurer pays up to seven years of interest.
- When the office auctions the contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes, it records the proceeds in the owner’s name so the owner or heirs can claim them.
- The program handles cash, securities and safe deposit box contents. It does not handle real property such as land, houses, cars or boats.
- To check by mail instead of online, write to Office of the Missouri State Treasurer, Unclaimed Property, PO Box 1004, Jefferson City, MO 65102, and include owner names and any previous addresses.
