A relative or the estate’s representative can claim for a deceased owner. What you need depends on who is claiming, the type of property, and whether the estate is still open.
What you will typically need
- A certified death certificate, which Pennsylvania law requires
- A short certificate showing who has authority over the estate, if the estate is still open or the property is over $11,000
- For smaller claims, a Relationship by Entitlement to Decedent Owner Affidavit may be used to establish your relationship to the owner
Requirements can vary with the type and amount of property. Follow the instructions on the official site.
What it costs
Free. The Treasury does not charge a fee to claim property. State law caps what a paid finder can charge at 15 percent.
Good to know
- The Treasury says it never contacts people about unclaimed property through unsolicited text messages.
